Today’s devotional from Piper’s Advent readings, Good News of Great Joy, expresses God’s delight in showcasing victory best on the heals of apparent defeat. We can usually appreciate this in literature and movies, in fact, many of our favorites are underdog stories. However, none of us like being in the valley in the moment.
One of my favorite proverbs says, For a righteous man falls seven times, and rises again. Pro. 24.16 (a)
Now read it again and stop short of the final five words: …a righteous man falls.
Have you fallen today? Have you failed again? God knows it and isn’t through with you yet.
You may say, “But, I did this to myself! I don’t deserve to get up again.” Maybe. Maybe not, but the grace of God isn’t ever about getting what you deserve. And God has made it clear in Scripture that He has brought victory and redemption to even those that cause themselves to stumble.
Do you think that there will be a time when you won’t keep making mistakes? The Scripture says that even a righteous man falls. Perhaps you are holding yourself to a standard that God, Himself does not hold. Rise up! Don’t stay down any longer. Don’t short-circuit God’s ultimate gift of the Gospel in your life. Rise up and take hold of the Gospel for falling people. You will never get beyond needing the Gospel; now get up!
